The database contains all natural seismic events within the bounding coordinates of 45.5°N, 111.5°W and 40.5°N, 103.5°W dating back to 1959. Additional data regarding seismic events related to mine explosions/collapses and other anthropogenic-sourced events can be found via ComCat. Data are “as is” and have not been reviewed or corrected by the WSGS. Data resolution can be found in the attribute table. Updates are completed monthly. It is modified from the original database, created by James C. Case and others. The information was gathered from numerous sources, however, much of the data were sourced from the National Earthquake Information Center. The dataset includes earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 2.5 or those that created ground–shaking intensities of II or greater based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. Many of the events in this database occurred prior to adequate instrumentation and were compiled from anecdotal evidence via newspapers and reports. For this reason, those records may or may not have related magnitudes. In those cases, intensities were determined based on historic record. Although great care was taken assembling the dataset, it is not considered to be complete. Data points were calculated at multiple scales and should not be considered to be exact.
