description: <DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>Modified from the original database, created by James C. Case and others. The information was gathered from numerous sources, however, much of the data were sourced from the National Earthquake Information Center. The dataset includes earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 2.5 or those that created ground–shaking intensities of II or greater based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. Many of the events in this database occurred prior to adequate instrumentation and were compiled from anecdotal evidence via newspapers and reports. For this reason, those records may or may not have related magnitudes. In those cases, intensities were determined based on historic record. Although great care was taken assembling the dataset, it is not considered to be complete. Data points were calculated at multiple scales and should not be considered to be exact.
