<descript>
The Digital Alteration and Metamorphic Areas (Surficial Map) of Yellowstone National Park and Vicinity, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho consists of alteration and metamorphic areas mapped as area (polygon) features. The data were completed as a component of the Geologic Resources Evaluation (GRE) program, a National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) funded program that is administered by the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD). The data were captured, grouped and attributed as per the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4. (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm). The data layer is available as a feature class in a 9.1 personal geodatabase (yell_geology.mdb). Attributed alteration and metamorphic area boundary lines that define the alteration and metamorphic area polygons are present within the Alteration and Metamorphic Area Contacts (YELLAMAA) data layer. The Alteration and Metamorphic Areas (YELLAMA) GIS data layer is also available as a coverage export (.E00) file (YELLAMA.E00), and as a shapefile (.SHP) file (YELLAMA.SHP). Each GIS data format has an ArcGIS 9.1 layer (.LYR) file (YELLAMA_GDB.LYR (geodatabase feature class), YELLAMA_COV.LYR (coverage), YELLAMA_SHP.LYR (shapefile)) with map symbology that is included with the GIS data. See the Distribution Information section for additional information on data acquisition. The GIS data projection is NAD83, UTM Zone 12N. The data is within the area of interest of Yellowstone National Park.
<purpose>The data are intended to assist NPS personnel in the protection and management of Yellowstone National Park.</purpose>
<supplinf>This dataset is just one component of the Digital Surficial Geologic Map of Yellowstone National Park and Vicinity, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The data layers (feature classes) that comprise the Digital Surficial Geologic Map of Yellowstone National Park and Vicinity, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho include: YELLAMA (Alteration and Metamorphic Areas), YELLAMAA (Alteration and Metamorphic Area Boundaries), YELLATD (Geologic Attitude and Observation Points), YELLCN1 (Paleoshorelines and Stream-Terraces), YELLFLT (Faults), YELLGAF (Glacial Area Features), YELLGAFA (Glacial Area Feature Boundaries), YELLGFL (Glacial Feature Lines), YELLGLG (Surficial Geologic Units), YELLGLGA (Surficial Geologic Contacts), YELLGML (Geologic Measurement Localities), YELLGOL (Geologic Observation Point Localities), YELLGPF (Geologic Point Features), YELLJLN (Linear Joints), YELLMAF (Mine Area Features), YELLMAFA (Mine Area Feature Boundaries), YELLMIN (Mine Point Features), YELLSUR (Surficial Units), YELLSURA (Surficial Contacts), YELLSYM (Fault Symbology), YELLVPF (Volcanic Point Features), YELLGFP (Glacial Feature Points) and YELLGLF (Escarpments and Flood Channels). There are three additional ancillary map components, the Geologic Unit Information (YELLGLG1) Table, the Source Map Information (YELLMAP) Table and the Map Help File (yell_surficial_geology.hlp). Refer to the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4 (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm) for detailed data layer (feature class) and table specifications including attribute field parameters, definitions and domains, and implemented topology rules and relationship classes.</supplinf>

<procstep>
<procdesc>Features were captured and attributed from a georeferenced source map .TIF image(s), scanned at 300dpi, georeferenced in NAD83 UTM projection, in a digitizing geodatabase with topological rules checking for intersection and dangle errors. These features were then parsed into a feature class within a new geodatabase and further attributed per the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4. Topology rules were imposed to check for and correct topology errors. Topology rules maintain spatial coincidence between features and related features in another feature class, as well as maintain defined spatial relationships within a single feature class. Relationship classes were also used to ensure attribution consistency. For more details about imposed topological and relationship rules, see the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4 (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm). Features were exported from the geodatabase to coverage and shapefile (.SHP) formats.</procdesc>
