This feature class was constructed to produce a digital geologic map as a basis for studying hydrothermal processes in Norris Geyser Basin. The original map does not contain registration tic marks. To create the geodatabase, the original scanned map was georegistered to USGS aerial photographs of the Norris Junction quadrangle collected in 1994. Man-made objects, i.e. roads, parking lots, and the visitor center, along with stream junctions and other hydrographic features were used for registration. This metadata file was written to provide a general overview for the database. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The data was edited at a scale of 1:2,400 and higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. The original map does not contain registration tic marks and was georegistered to USGS aerial photographs of the Norris Junction quadrangle collected in 1994. Plotting at scales larger than 1:2,400 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.  jrobins@usgs.gov The database was compiled in 2004-2005 from original geologic mapping published in USGS Professional Paper 1456, with geology by Donald E. White, 1969-1982. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.2.2.1350 Personal GeoDatabase Feature Class Unclassified Polygons and their map unit attributes were mapped by the Donald E. White for Plate 1 of USGS Professional Paper 1456 using aerial photographs at an unknown scale. Kathryn Flynn digitized the polygon, line, and point features at 1:2,400 scale. The attributes of this dataset consist of text identifiers that indicate the identity of the geologic unit or line. To check attribute accuracy, a color check plot was visually compared to the geologist's original compilation. Discrepancies between the digital geospatial dataset and the map were corrected as needed. Attribute accuracy is described, where present, with each attribute that is defined in the Entitiy Attribute section. Polygon and arc feature classes were edited using ArcGIS topology. Polygon and arc (chain-node) topology present in appropriate feature classes. Other feature classes are point, annotation or raster and do not require topologic relationships. This dataset is intended to describe completely the map units at 1:2,400 scale as presented in Plate 1 of USGS Professional Paper 1456. Geological information only mappable at larger scale has been omitted. Well located data items are intended to have a horizontal positional accuracy better than 0.05 mm at 1:2,400 scale, or within 1.2 meters on the ground. Points in the database are generally well located. The position of each data item is derived from a custom USGS 1:2,400 topographic base map, and therefore additional inaccuracies may also be encountered that are within National Map Accuracy Standards. unknown Donald E. The TIFF file was georeferenced to USGS aerial photos of the Norris area (norris_juction_nw, 1994). The geologic contacts were digitized using the Editor toolbar available in the ArcInfo edition of ArcGIS 9.0, ESRI. These arcs were converted to polygons. The arc and polygons were then attributed to match original mapping. An ArcMap document was then created to best match the look of the paper map. This database has two arc feature classes contours, geology_arc and streams_arc. The contour feature class contains several fields: CONTOURS contains the elevation of each contour and SHAPE_LENGTH contain the length of the arc. Geology_arc defines the boundaries of the map units and other delineated area polygons as well as linear features. These distinctions, including geologic characterizations of linear features, are recorded as attributes in the LTYPE_1 field in the feature class. Stream_arcs records the name of each stream in NAME and the Shape_Length of each stream. The are two polygon feature classes. Basin_poly delinates the mapped basins and records the NAME, SHAPE_LENGTH, and SHAPE_AREA fields record the names, perimeters, and areas of each feature. Map units (polygons) are described in the geology_poly feature class in the database. Map units from compilation sources are recorded in the PTYPE field in the feature class. SHAPE_LENGTH and SHAPE_AREA fields record the perimeters, and areas of each feature. Point features are described in the point_features feature class in the database. The points mark the locations of vents, springs, structural measurements, geysers, and drill holes, which are described in the TYPE field in the feature class. Many features on this map have geographic names associated with them and these names are recorded in the NAME field in the Attribute Tables. DIP and STRIKE record the structure attitudes.
