<descript>
The Digital Linear Geologic Units Yellowstone National Park and Vicinity, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho consists of linear geologic units mapped as line (arc) features. The data were completed as a component of the Geologic Resources Evaluation (GRE) program, a National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) funded program that is administered by the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD). The data were captured, grouped and attributed as per the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4. (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm). The data layer is available as a feature class in a 9.1 personal geodatabase (ybed_geology.mdb). The Linear Geologic Units (YBEDGLN) GIS data layer is also available as a coverage export (.E00) file (YBEDGLN.E00), and as a shapefile (.SHP) file (YBEDGLN.SHP). Each GIS data format has an ArcGIS 9.1 layer (.LYR) file (YBEDGLN_GDB.LYR (geodatabase feature class), YBEDGLN_COV.LYR (coverage), YBEDGLN_SHP.LYR (shapefile) with map symbology that is included with the GIS data. See the Distribution Information section for additional information on data acquisition. The GIS data projection is NAD83, UTM Zone 12N. The data is within the area of interest of Yellowstone National Park.
<purpose>The data are intended to assist NPS personnel in the protection and management of Yellowstone National Park.</purpose>
<supplinf>This dataset is just one component of the Digital Geologic Map of Yellowstone National Park and Vicinity, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The data layers (feature classes) that comprise the Digital Geologic Map of Yellowstone National Park and Vicinity, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho include: YBEDAMA (Alteration and Metamorphic Areas), YBEDAMAA (Alteration and Metamorphic Area Boundaries), YBEDATD (Geologic Attitude and Observation Points), YBEDDKE (Linear Dikes), YBEDFLD (Folds), YBEDFLT (Faults), YBEDGLF (Geologic Line Features), YBEDGLG (Geologic Units), YBEDGLGA (Geologic Contacts), YBEDGLN (Linear Geologic Units), YBEDGOL (Phosphate Trenches), YBEDLIN (Chaos Boundary), YBEDMAF (Mine Dumps and Mill Tailings), YBEDMAFA (Mine Dumps and Mill Tailings Boundaries), YBEDMIN (Mine Point Features), YBEDSEC (Geologic Cross Section Lines), YBEDSYM (Fault and Fold Symbology), YBEDVPF (Volcanic Point Features), YBEDASH (Ash Units) and YBEDASHA (Ash Contacts). There are three additional ancillary map components, the Geologic Unit Information (YBEDGLG1) Table, the Source Map Information (YBEDMAP) Table and the Map Help File (yell_geology.hlp). Refer to the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4 (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm) for detailed data layer (feature class) and table specifications including attribute field parameters, definitions and domains, and implemented topology rules and relationship classes.</supplinf>

<procstep>
<procdesc>Features were converted from source data or digitized from a source paper map. Features converted from source data were imported into a geodatabase and attributed per the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4. Features captured from a source paper map were scanned as .TIF image(s) at 300dpi, georeferenced in NAD83 UTM projection, and captured in a digitizing geodatabase with topological rules checking for intersection and dangle errors. These features were then parsed into feature classes within a new geodatabase and further attributed per the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4. If a published paper copy of the data was available, it was used to quality check converted data. Topology rules were imposed on converted and digitized data to check for and correct topology errors. Topology rules maintain spatial coincidence between features and related features in another feature class, as well as maintain defined spatial relationships within a single feature class. Relationship classes were also used to ensure attribution consistency. For more details about imposed topological and relationship rules, see the NPS GRE Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 1.4 (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm). Features were exported from the geodatabase to coverage and shapefile (.SHP) formats.</procdesc>
