The main Trail Survey took place during the years of 1997-2000. Differentially corrected GPS (Global Positioning System) data were collected primarily
on foot for all existing maintained trails and spur trails to backcountry campsites, attractions and buildings within the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park (YNP).The trails that could not be obtained through the GPS or have been rerouted since the survey were acquired through the uses of 1 meter Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads (DOQQs) and the help of backcountry rangers with knowledge of where the trails are located. There are also associated GPS data for trail bridges, backcountry campsites, patrol cabins and trail surface type. Trail usage data also documented by using visitor ski and bike trail maps. Trails data have been updated since the original survey using information from the Yellowstone Backcountry Office, trails maintenance personnel, best available imagery resources, and GPS data. This layer is a work in progress.

<descript>
<purpose>
This survey is intended to provide an accurate
geographical coverage of trails within Yellowstone
National Park for the purposes of maintenance and
increased recreational enjoyment.

The data produced from GPS field data are assumed
to be spatially accurate to within 2-5 meters.
Maximum PDOP was set to 6 and data were only
collected when at least 4 satellites were
readable. Data acquired from DOQQs can have a
spatial accuracy within 5-10 meters.

Features were quality controlled by verifying the
locations of the features with the NPS district
rangers. Backcountry trails locations that were
not surveyed with a GPS or rerouted with in the
three year survey period were obtained by having
backcountry rangers from each district identify
where the trail is located on a 1-meter DOQQ.
Using ArcView, a line was digitized to the
specified location. The ArcView shapefile of
trails was converted to an Arc/Info coverage using
the SHAPEARC command with PRECISION set to DOUBLE
HIGH. The coverage was then added to the coverage
containing the GPS trails using the PUT command
in ArcEdit.

<overview>
<eaover>NOTE: The overview below is for the original coverage file. As the data are migrated to the Draft Generic Enterprise Geospatial Data Standard these fields will change. (Guiles 4/2009)
This coverage contains the following attribute
fields: SURVEYOR: name of the surveyor;
SURVYDAT:date the feature was surveyed; NAME:
common trail name. The NAME of the Trail were
obtained using Trails Illustrated Map and the
Trail Names database created by the Ranger
Divsion. TYPE; if the trail is a Main Trail, a
Spur trail, an off shoot of the main trail that
either goes to a backcountry campsite, attraction
or building, a Boardwalk or Paved Path; SURVEY;
The survey method is either GPS - using a Globe
Positioning System, or Office - using DOQQs in the
office and the knowledge of a backcountry ranger
familiar with the area.</eaover>

<idAbs>

The main Trail Survey took place during the years of 1997-2000. Differentially corrected GPS (Global Positioning System) data were collected primarily on foot for all existing maintained trails and spur trails to backcountry campsites, attractions and buildings within the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park (YNP).The trails that could not be obtained through the GPS or have been rerouted since the survey were acquired through the uses of 1 meter Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads (DOQQs) and the help of backcountry rangers with knowledge of where the trails are located.

Data were minimally modified as necessary (e.g. clipped to spatial extent, desired features extracted, projected to a different coordinate system, attribute fields renamed and/or added, symbolized) by the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) in May, 2020 for simplified display on the interactive Geology of Yellowstone Map. The WSGS has not formally reviewed or quality-controlled these data; users are encouraged to consult the original data source.

</idAbs>

<statement>The main Trail Survey took place during the years of 1997-2000. This layer is a work in progress.</statement>
<prcStep>
<stepDesc>Data were brought into Arc/Info v7.1. & 8.01 The node errors were eliminated from the coverage by snapping all intersecting arcs together. Arcs representing trails were also snapped to their corresponding bridges and campsites.</stepDesc>
<stepDateTm>2000-03-01</stepDateTm>
</prcStep>
<prcStep>
<stepDesc>Features were quality controlled by verifying the locations of the features with the NPS district rangers. Backcountry trails locations that were not surveyed with a GPS or rerouted with in the three year survey period were obtained by having backcountry rangers from each district identify where the trail is located on a 1-meter DOQQ. Using ArcView, a line was digitized to the specified location. The ArcView shapefile of trails was converted to an Arc/Info coverage using the SHAPEARC command with PRECISION set to DOUBLE HIGH. The coverage was then added to the coverage containing the GPS trails using the PUT command in ArcEdit.</stepDesc>
